FitnessMat FAQ

What is FitnessMat made of?

FitnessMat is made with our STP – SmartTech Polyurethane Technology. The core of STP is polyurethane – a premium standard for anti-fatigue mats. It is more expensive than other commonly used materials, but offers the best support and comfort and provides exceptional value over time. This gives the FitnessMat an extended life cycle, making them environmentally friendly. For additional information on our STP, visit the Smart Step features and benefits page.

How do you clean and sanitize FitnessMat?

The FitnessMat is easily sanitized with any ordinary gym wipe or cleaner. All Smart Step mats require little to no special care, so you can easily clean them with a towel or with mild soap and water.

What does anti-microbial mean?

Anti-microbial is a term given to an object that is capable of destroying or inhibiting the growth of disease-causing microorganisms. Other mats use additive anti-microbial liquid bases to coat their mats. Coated type mats tend to wear off over time and could cause the growth of bacteria. The FitnessMat is 99.99% anti-microbial – by design...inherent in our material formulation. No additives are necessary.

How do you justify the cost of a FitnessMat?

FitnessMat is made of 100% polyurethane, which is a petroleum based product. They are also a molded one-piece construction mat, so the costs of producing them are much higher than less expensive multi-layered glued together mats. Our "Best-In-Class" FitnessMat comes with a comprehensive 5-year manufacturer's warranty, offering value over a minimum 5 year life expectancy.

Can I hang a FitnessMat up?

Yes, we can create hanging holes with grommets in a 4' FitnessMat to match your current hanging system and we offer wall-mounted brackets for sale. Please contact us for details on ordering a hanging system.

Should we get the 4' or 6' size?

Commonly, clubs utilize the 6' FitnessMat in stretching areas or for yoga and Pilates, while the 4' FitnessMat is ideal for group exercise and home fitness. How much do FitnessMats weigh?

A 4' FitnessMat weighs 10 lbs and a 6' FitnessMat weighs 15.5 lbs. This helps to keep the mats in place during use in exercise routines.

When returning or exchanging my FitnessMat, how do I roll my mat and pack it back up?

FitnessMat can be stored flat or rolled. If you have to roll your FitnessMat, turn your mat over with the top side down; roll mat and place in the original box. Rolling the mats incorrectly will cause damage to the mat and could forfeit your warranty.

Will FitnessMat stain my floor?

The bottom of FitnessMat is free of paints and coatings that cause staining; our unique proprietary engineering allows the color pigment to be directly injected into the polyurethane. Company research has found that some types of flooring, and Linoleum in particular, may be made from raw, sometimes inexpensive materials including linseed oil. This type of flooring and floors sealed with a non-urethane based sealer may have a tendency to cause slight discoloring when covered. Although very rare, a few cases are known where linseed oil or the adhesives used to seal floors have an oxidation effect due to lack of UV light over time. This adverse effect could happen with any type of floor covering. If you have concerns about the chance of any discoloration or material reaction, it is our recommendation that you contact your floor installer to learn more about your finish. If you have further questions, please call 866.624.5700 and a Smart Step customer service representative will be happy to assist you.
